It’s an extension of the anti-vaccination movement.

I know this will not happen but what I would like to see is that their child is taken from them. To refuse any medical treatment is insane especially when it is as simple as this one is.

The anti-vaxxers have a lot to answer for, but they will just brush it off.

This is seen primarily in people who want every as “natural” as possible. I review birth plans every day in the office and cannot tell you how often I see this on the plan. The patient and I then discuss what her real objection is. Usually, they got it off websites for
“natural ” births and just do not understand the purpose for the vitamin K is to prevent bleeding in the brain. The baby’s liver is not mature enough to produce enough vitamin K yet. Also, it helps convey what these bleeds actually involve if you explain that the bleeding is just a type of stroke. Most people understand what having a stroke means.

Aside: The baby’s immature liver is the usual cause of neonatal jaundice. It takes about 2 days to show up because the mother’s liver was clearing the bilirubin for the baby. The baby is on its own once the cord is clamped.

Yeah, they are scum.

I hesitate to call people scum. A few people actively promote this, which is a bad thing to do, but most just repeat what they have heard and would like to believe. Problem is that we are so far removed from “natural” that most people have no clue what it means.
Hint: Natural does not mean a return to Eden or some other such nonsense.

You’re right. I should have said those who promote anti-vaccine ideas, like the National Vaccine Information Center, are scum. Parents who bought into this are victims of this nonsense.
